Wherever the Tamburitzans perform, their stage becomes a kaleidoscope of sight and sound. Songs are sung in many languages and dialects. Footwork is articulated in hundreds of styles. Folk instruments such as the bandura, tambura, gadulka, and cimbalom are plucked, picked, bowed and hammered. Costuming alone is a great reason to see a Tamburitzans show. During the course of a single performance, over 400 original and authentically reproduced costumes are worn by the performers. Each costume design is meticulously researched for authenticity, then created for the stage. The result is a carousel of style and color from the first note to the final stomp.

The multitude of cultural influences from the countries and ethnographic regions of Eastern and Southeastern Europe, including Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Carpatho-Rus' , Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine - and many others - presents a virtual mother lode of possibilities for the performing stage. The Tamburitzans have capitalized on this cultural wealth for 71 years, returning the dividends to their audiences.

Dancing the different dances from other countries is a lot of fun and is a good workout.  If you are new to international folk dancing, here are a few pointers to follow.

  1. Dress casual so you can move freely.

  2. Wear clean, comfortable, non-marking shoes so the wooden dance floor isn't scuffed up. (Seperate dance shoes prefered!)

  3. Bring a water bottle.

If this is your first time at folkdancing, it can be a little intimidating because you don't know the steps or the dances.  There is a small set of steps that are basic to most dances.  With every dance you learn, you will also learn several of these steps.  As you learn a couple more dances and steps, learning becomes easier because then you are stringing together steps you already know.  If starting out here are a few hints.

  1. Arrive at 7:30 and take advantage of the teaching.  The dances taught will be reviewed and danced again at 9:30.

  2. During open dancing, get behind the dancers and try to follow along.  Don't worry about getting the whole dance, but at least see the steps involved.

  3. When following along, get behind the more experienced dancers.

  4. If you need assistance ask someone to show you the step.
